Whispers of Love

Have you ever stopped to listen to your home?

Maybe you pause in the middle of dinner prep and suddenly the “simple sounds of life” grow loud in your ears: the fridge humming, your teen walking upstairs, the microwave whirring, the neighbor’s car door, a cheerful bird in the tree outside, the puppy scratching his bed to get comfy, your hubby opening the garage door…. Sounds of home.

Our hearts need little reminders of God’s love too. Oh, His love is always present as Romans 8:35 reminds us:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
(The answer, “NOTHING, of course!”)

But when life gets loud we can fail to notice His repeated, gentle whispers of love.

Listen for whispers

A grace preacher tells the story of how God uses heart shapes in ordinary life to remind him of God’s love. Now Pastor John is not of the sentimental variety, but for some reason this theme is something special between him and Jesus.

Once on a rough day, John took a hike with his dog. He was fussing and fuming about something when all of a sudden he looked down. There on the path right in front of him was a giant, smelly cow patty . . . in the shape of a heart!

To anyone else, it would've been a gross pile to avoid. But John knew. He caught the significance. A silly, personal reminder from a God who knows him better than he knows himself. A God who whispers love to him even on the rough days.

We, too, can be open to ways God reminds us of His love in everyday life. Today may we listen with the ears of our hearts to catch the gentle, ongoing sounds of His love for us.
