Sitting across from a friend at lunch, I heard this story.
For four years in a row now, I’ve taken time off each summer to serve at a non-profit camp for at-risk kids. It’s the highlight of my year!
Every year God has taken care of my business while I’m out of the office and basically off-grid for an entire week. Being self employed, that much time away could potentially throw my business into chaos. But every single time, God has taken care of the business! He’s made sure things run smoothly so I still have consistent cash flow.
I don’t know why I’m worrying this year when He’s taken care of me every other time.
Why is it we have such a hard time trusting God this time even though He provided last time?
Change the story
As we continued to talk, something dawned on me: we can change the story! So, I told my friend – as much for my own heart as for his…
I bet we wouldn’t worry nearly as much if we took time to remember our God stories. If we wrote down the story each time God takes care of us, we’d have a list to look at when we’re tempted to worry or doubt or fear. Anytime we need a heart pick-me-up, we can reread the stories and say, “See how God did this and this and that other thing? He’ll take care of me this time too because He’s still the same God today!”
My friend loved the idea, and we both vowed to write some stories down.
Grow in faith
What worry haunts you today or makes you wonder how God’s going to provide?
One of the best ways to fight this fear is with good, ol’ fashioned story time.
- Take a few minutes to sit down with your journal (or your memory) and remember a time when God took care of you in the past.
- Close your eyes and recall those precious moments you saw Him work.
- Recall the joy and gratitude you felt.
- Then remind yourself the very same God is with you today.
While He may not solve this current situation the same way, He will take care of you because He’s promised He would! (Hebrews 13:5, Philippians 4:19) And remembering your God stories can make your heart happier and your faith stronger as you wait on Him.
Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.
